PROKOFIEV

Symphony No. 1 in D major (“Classical”)

Hilary Hahn joins Marin Alsop and the DSO for Mozart’s final violin concerto, composed when Mozart was only 19 years of age and loaded with opportunities to showcase Hilary Hahn’s virtuosity (she’s played this work since she was 10 years old). Sometimes nicknamed his “Turkish” concerto, the finale is cut short by a gypsy dance melody before it comes to a triumphant close. When asked about his ebullient first symphony Prokofiev said “It seemed to me that if Haydn had lived into this era, he would have kept his own style while absorbing things from what was new in music. That’s the kind of symphony I wanted to write: a symphony in the Classical style.” Add the US Premiere of an evocative work by Magnus Lindberg and the Dallas Premiere of Montgomery's Strum and you have a concert you simply can’t miss!

“Hahn never gives up her pinpoint precision in the movement's minuet theme. And she brings out real muscle when, in the middle of the movement, Mozart inserts a janissary-influenced section that evokes a Turkish military band and gives the concerto its nickname.”- NPR Review of Hahn’s 2015 recording of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5
