2019/20 Youth Concerts:
Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra
Nov. 13 & 14, 10:00am and 11:30am
A Benjamin Britten masterpiece returns! From the violins to the triangle, from the tuba to the harp, the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra is a riveting introduction to all the instruments of the orchestra. Britten’s stirring music has inspired generations of young audiences, so you don’t want to miss the chance to hear this orchestral classic, in a fun program that also includes music by Mozart, Copland, Donizetti, and Grieg. Led by the DSO’s new Assistant Conductor, Katharina Wincor.
Beethoven at 250
Jan. 22 & 23, 10:00am and 11:30am
The DSO celebrates Beethoven’s birthday in an enchanting and engaging performance featuring the legendary composer himself! If everything works the way it’s supposed to, the maestro will be brought to present day by a newly-invented Musical Time Machine. Then, together with the DSO, he will share his incredible life story and the inspiring music he created, including masterpieces such as Für Elise, the Fidelio Overture, his symphonies, and the Emperor Concerto.
Music of the People
April 29 & 30, 10:00am and 11:30am
Folk music expresses the nature of a people – where they live, what they do, and even how they speak. All music started this way, and folk-songs and folk-dances remain at the very heart of every musical tradition. You’ll be amazed at how much of the grand orchestral concert music we hear grows right out of them! Featured composers include Brahms, Mahler, Márquez, Dvořák, Still, and Ives.
